Overnight Care in Cambridge
A trained carer in the home overnight, so your loved one — and you — can finally sleep. Available single nights, weekends, ongoing, or as part of live-in care.
Two Types of Overnight Care — Different Needs, Different Prices
Choosing between sleep-in and waking-night care depends on what your loved one needs in the night. Here’s the difference.
Sleep-in Care
The carer sleeps at the home in a separate bedroom and is on call if your loved one wakes, falls, or needs help. They’re entitled to undisturbed rest most of the night, but available for up to 2 brief interventions per night.
Waking Night Care
The carer is awake all night, actively monitoring and providing care. Suitable for high-needs clients who require regular repositioning, frequent toileting, severe sundowning or end-of-life symptom management.

When You Need Overnight Care
If two or more of these are happening, overnight cover usually pays for itself in better health outcomes — and in your own sleep.
Recent falls
If your loved one has fallen in the night or been found on the floor in the morning — overnight care prevents the next one. Falls have devastating consequences for older adults.
Sundowning & night-time confusion
Dementia patients often become more confused at night. They wander, leave the cooker on, try to leave the house. Overnight care contains this safely.
Family carer exhaustion
If you’re up 3-4 times a night caring for a parent or partner, you can’t sustain it. Overnight care is the single most impactful intervention for family carer burnout.
Recent hospital discharge
The first 2-4 weeks home are the highest readmission risk. Overnight cover prevents night-time incidents and gives the family confidence to actually sleep.
Common Questions
What’s the actual difference between sleep-in and waking nights?
Sleep-in: carer sleeps, on call, up to 2 interventions per night. Waking: carer is awake and actively caring all night. Sleep-in is right for mobility/falls risk, mild-moderate dementia. Waking is right for advanced dementia with severe sundowning, palliative care, frequent night needs.
Can we book just one night?
Yes. Single nights, weekend cover, holiday cover, or ongoing weekly schedule. Minimum is 1 night.
How quickly can it start?
Often within 48 hours. Sometimes 24 hours for urgent situations.
Where does the carer sleep on a sleep-in?
In a separate bedroom — spare room, study with a put-up bed, or any private space.
Will it be the same carer each night?
For ongoing schedules — yes. For ad-hoc nights, we try to but can’t always guarantee. For waking nights, continuity matters even more.
Can the council or NHS pay?
Possibly. NHS Continuing Healthcare can fund overnight care for clients with significant clinical needs. Local Authority care plans sometimes fund overnight cover.
What if it’s just for a few weeks?
Fine — most families start with 1-2 weeks of overnight cover and reassess. No minimum contract beyond a single night.
