When Families Arrange Respite
Every respite arrangement is different. These are the most common situations we support.

You've earned a week away. We provide live-in or daily respite so your relative stays in their own home while you travel. One or two carers on a rotation if it's longer than a week.

Emergency respite
Family carer hospitalised, injured, or suddenly unable to continue. We can often start within 24 hours, with a written plan and a matched carer. Usually the most stressful moment families call us.

Regular scheduled respite
A weekend off every month. A few hours a week so you can see friends. A predictable pattern that lets family carers stay sustainable long-term — which benefits everyone.

Family carer surgery/treatment
You need your own hospital procedure, but who looks after Mum? Respite care for the duration of your recovery — typically 2–6 weeks — is a common arrangement.

Many families use a short respite placement as a gentle introduction before committing to ongoing care. Your parent meets a carer, experiences the support, and the family can evaluate the fit.

When palliative care is intense, families need respite just to cope. Our end-of-life-trained carers step in for nights, weekends, or emergencies, working alongside district nurses and hospice teams.
How Respite Works
Flexible duration
From a single afternoon to several months. Weekend respite. A fortnight abroad. Recurring monthly breaks. Minimum booking for live-in respite is typically one week; hourly respite has no minimum commitment.
Crossover with you
Before you leave, the respite carer spends time with you and your relative. You share routines, preferences, medications, red flags. They take detailed notes. You leave feeling confident, not anxious.
Same quality as long-term care
Our respite carers are the same trained, DBS-checked staff who deliver ongoing care. For complex or dementia clients, we match a carer experienced with those needs — not a generic substitute.
Clear communication while you're away
Daily update messages if you want them. WhatsApp a photo and a brief note, or a phone call each evening. You choose what reassurance looks like. Emergency contact is always direct to the Care Coordinator.

Respite Care Questions
What's the minimum booking?
Hourly respite: no minimum. Live-in respite: typically one week. For true emergencies (sudden hospitalisation of the family carer), we can sometimes arrange shorter live-in cover within hours.
How quickly can emergency respite start?
Often within 24 hours for urgent situations. Our Care Coordinators keep a small pool of respite-experienced carers available for emergencies. For complex clients (dementia, PEG, tracheostomy) it may take 48–72 hours to match the right carer.
Will they be able to handle my relative's specific needs?
We match respite carers to the specific needs — dementia-trained for dementia clients, complex-trained for clinical needs. For anything non-routine, we ensure the carer has shadowed similar cases before being deployed.
Can I use respite while my relative is in hospital?
If they're in hospital, you don't need respite — hospital covers the care. But if they're being discharged and you can't immediately step back into the carer role, we can provide bridging respite to give you time to recover.
Can a Local Authority fund respite?
Yes. Under the Care Act 2014, local authorities can fund respite when you're assessed as a family carer. We can help you request an assessment and work with councils across all our six regions to set up funded respite packages.
What if I need to extend while I'm away?
Just call or WhatsApp your Care Coordinator. We'll extend seamlessly where we can. For live-in respite, we may need to arrange a carer changeover if it extends beyond their booked rotation — handled smoothly without disruption.
